Bitdefender review: top lab scores, and a renewal price it won't print

Bitdefender is the antivirus to buy if lab scores decide it. The weak spots are on the pricing page: the terms say renewal "may be higher than the initial purchase price", and the page doesn't say by how much.

What the labs say

AV-TEST's Bitdefender page (checked Nov 1, 2026) lists Total Security 27.0 at 6 out of 6 for protection in each of six rounds, October 2025 through August 2026. Performance was 6 in all but the first, which was 5.5. Usability was 6 every time.

The August 2026 round tested 15 home products on Windows 11 over July and August. Bitdefender got 6, 6 and 6. Microsoft Defender got 6, 5.5 and 6. That half point is the whole difference, which is why Microsoft Defender vs Bitdefender is closer than the price gap suggests.

AV-Comparatives' Consumer Real-World Protection Test, February to May 2026, covered 20 products. Bitdefender Total Security is one of seven with the top Advanced+ award. Defender, Norton and Avast are among the others.

On Mac, AV-TEST's June 2026 round gave Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac 10.3 a 6/6/6 as well.

What it costs

Entry is Antivirus Plus: $2.50 a month billed yearly, which is $29.99 for the first year and up to 3 devices (Bitdefender, checked November 1, 2026).

Total Security Individual is $59.99 for the first year, covering 1 member and up to 5 devices. Total Security Family is $79.99 first year for 5 members and up to 25 devices. Premium Security Individual is $79.99 for the first year.

Those are first-term prices. The terms say renewal "may be higher," and Bitdefender says it will email you before the renewal charge, with the price, and starts expiry emails 30 days out. It does not print a number on this page. Norton's side of this is in Bitdefender vs Norton.

The trial is 30 days, no card. Refund requests go to Bitdefender within 30 days of the initial purchase or the automatic renewal date. That second part matters: the clock restarts at renewal.

The extras

Total Security adds a password manager, a VPN, ransomware protection, scam protection and a privacy firewall. The VPN is the letdown: 200 MB a day, which the FAQ puts at 6 GB a month. That covers some email and not much video. Unlimited VPN comes only with Premium Security.

Data breach detection is listed for Android and iOS, per a footnote. The parental controls are for Family plans only.

On Mac, the Antivirus for Mac page lists Time Machine Protection, which guards backups against malware that tries to encrypt them, and Safe Files, which restricts chosen folders to trusted apps. More Mac options are in best antivirus for Mac.

Who should skip it

If you run one Windows PC and don't want the extras, Defender's lab results are the same on protection. Free, and no renewal. The reasoning is in is Microsoft Defender enough.

If you want a VPN you'll actually use, budget for a separate one or the Premium tier. The product entry is Bitdefender.
